Terms of Service

Last updated: September 20, 2026

These terms govern your use of Moonlight, the personal finance app at moonlightfi.com and app.moonlightfi.com. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use Moonlight.

What Moonlight is

Moonlight shows you your balances, transactions, spending, and net worth. You connect a bank through Plaid or upload CSV and PDF statements. Moonlight is not a bank, credit union, broker, or money transmitter. We do not hold your money, move it, make payments, or change anything at your bank. Nothing in the app is financial, tax, investment, or legal advice. Decisions about your money stay yours.

Your account

You must be at least 18. Keep your sign-in details to yourself. If you turn on two-factor authentication, store your recovery codes somewhere you can find them. You are responsible for activity on your account.

Bank connections

Bank linking runs through Plaid. You authenticate with your institution inside Plaid's own widget. We never receive or store your bank login or one-time codes. We request read-only access to balances and transactions. There is no code path that could move money. You can disconnect an institution at any time from Settings, which revokes the connection at Plaid. Plaid's own terms and end-user privacy policy also apply to that connection.

Uploads

You may upload CSV or PDF statements so we can extract balances and transactions. You confirm you have the right to upload those files. We check the file's actual bytes rather than trusting its name, cap size at 20 MB, and store uploads under your account.

AI features

We use AI to categorize transactions and summarize spending. Calls are made on our servers. Only the details needed for the task are sent. Your bank credentials and identity documents are never part of a prompt. AI providers process data on our instructions and are not permitted to train models on it.

Connecting other tools

You can connect AI clients such as Claude so you can ask questions about your finances. You can also use the Moonlight command-line tool. Those connections are read-only, require your approval, and can be revoked in Settings. You are responsible for what you share with a connected tool.

Acceptable use

Use Moonlight for your own personal finances. Do not try to access another person's data, disrupt the service, scrape it at scale, or use it to break the law. If you find a security issue, email security@moonlightfi.com before disclosing it publicly.

Accuracy and availability

Bank data comes from Plaid and your institutions. Uploaded data comes from the files you provide. Projections (your next payday, upcoming bills, and how low your balance may dip) are estimates based on what we have, not guarantees. We work to keep the service available, but we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free.

Your data

Your financial data is yours. How we collect, use, store, and delete it is described in our Privacy Policy. You can delete individual accounts, statements, or your entire account at any time from Settings. Deleting your account removes your financial data from our systems and disconnects your items at Plaid.

The product and the mark

Moonlight the product, the name, and the mark belong to us. You keep your data. You grant us the limited permission we need to operate the service for you: store it, display it, and process it as described in the Privacy Policy.

Fees

Moonlight is free today. If we introduce paid plans, we will tell you before you are charged. You can delete your account rather than pay.

If something goes wrong

The information in Moonlight comes from your banks, from Plaid, and from files you upload. We work to show it accurately, but we cannot guarantee it is complete or current. You remain responsible for the decisions you make with it. We are not liable for lost profits, lost data we have already deleted at your request, or problems at Plaid, your bank, or your internet connection. If we are liable to you, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us for Moonlight in the twelve months before the claim, or $100 if you have not paid us.

Ending the service

You can stop using Moonlight and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts the service or other people at risk. If we discontinue Moonlight, we will notify you.

Early access

Requesting early access puts your email on a waitlist. It does not create an account and it does not charge you.

Changes

If we change these terms, we will update this page and the date at the top. For material changes we will notify you by email or in the app. Continued use after the update means you accept the new terms.
